Life must have some of both.  One imagines we only want happiness, but in time it could feel like swimming around in syrup.  Some sadness helps towards our own spiritual development and awareness and it certainly helps towards understanding of others and building up of compassion.

  1. Much happiness is overlooked, because it doesn't cost anything.

  2. He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices in those he has.

  3. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.

  4. Most fold are as happy as they make up their minds to be!

  5. A single joy drives away a thousand sorrows.

  6. Happiness resides, not in possessions and not in gold.  The feeling of happiness resides in the Soul.

Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet says "sorrow & joy come from one source."

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.  And the self same well from which your laughter rises is oftentimes filled with your tears.  Together they come and when one sits alone with you at the board, remember that the other is asleep in your bed.
